Is there a way to "mute" discussion posts until the student has posted his response? In other words, the students can't see any other discussion posts until they have posted their own response.

Hi Patrick - this option isn't in Bb. You may be able to use the moderator role on discussion boards to approve messages, but this is a manual process.
