Blackboard 9.1 Enterprise

We have an instructor that has asked if there is a way for students to submit things to him without having to have it attached to an assignment. These items are not things that need graded, simply for the instructor to review, so he doesn't want them attached to an assignment column. He mentioned the old Digital Dropbox from BB 8, but as far as I can tell, there is nothing like that available in 9.1... is there? The only thing I could think of was to have the students go into the message center and send it to him that way, or just email it to him directly. Ideas?

Adam,

No, the digital dropbox has been removed in Blackboard 9.  However, there are other ways that students could communicate and pass files back and forth with the instructor.   The simplest would be for the instructor to create a journal, which is private between the student instructor unless the instructor specifically allows course users to view the journal.  Journal entries can have file attachments, and can receive comments by the instructor or the student.

Alice,

Have you looked at the assignment feature at all?  For having students submit papers, that's really the right tool.  When you create an assignment, it makes a link for students to attach and submit a file (their paper), and at the same time makes an associated grade center column where you can download the papers for that assignment individually or all at once.  It's a lot easier to manage student submissions as assignments than it was through the digital dropbox!

If the Instructor Adds a Group Link to the Class Menu they will have access to the Group tools including the File Exchange option this will make the items available to everyone in the group not just the Instructor. Not sure if that is what you are looking for but hope it helps.

King Mike (my official title for you), I'm very unhappy that the Digital Dropbox is gone. My fantasy of an upgrade was that they would make a batch download available. Ah, well.

So - do you know if students can upload a paper onto Bb if I designate a gradebook item as a "paper." In the category, that is.

Does it have to be a journal?

And do you happen to have a preference for efficiency of time? Emailing papers to you or using journals or any other alternative for paper submission?

Thank you for your time!

Michael,

Do you know if users can still access files that have stored in the digital drop box after the 9.1 upgrade?

Thanks!

Is there somethng special that needs to be done when creating the assignment? I don't see any entries for allowing student's to submit attachments. I'm new to this new version of BB

Fred - if you click the assignment to go into it, you should have a browse button to attach files.
