When I attempt to import my spreadsheet to the grade book I receive "Failed to import the follow rows [all] due to Invalid File Format"

I have done this for months and have sent the file for others to try.

Spreadsheet saved as CSV
Separator: Comma
Character Set: Unicode (UTF-8)

Next page indicates that Last Name and First Name columns have not found their immediate matches. I go ahead anyway. The error message is received on the next screen. Any advice would be highly appreciated!

Hi Athena,

Do you have a "User Id" column in the import file that contains the same IDs as in the course "User ID" column?

Do the number of columns in the spreadsheet, match the number of column headers?

Any extraneous data in the import file?

Hope this helps...

Cheers,

Bob

Hello,

Same problem here. My issue is that it will import about half of the students, but then the bottom portion are not imported. Since it imports some and not others the previous solutions don't appear valid. Another point is I was able to do this with the previous worksheet, but not now. Thanks for any help.

Did you ever resolve this issue? We have a faculty this is happening to, specifically using a Mac. When a Windows version of MS Excel is used the problem goes away. This of course isn't a solution.

Hi Makay,

How many records are there in your spreadsheet? On a number of file imports in Blackboard there are limits of 500 records (rows) or the product will time out. So if you were able to import half your records, it may be the result of a timeout if you have a large number of records.

Splitting the upload into 2 may solve that problem.

Hope that helps,

Hi Valerie,

Since we haven't seen a response solving the previous, it isn't clear whether it was resolved or not. If you are using Blackboard Classic (if you click on "Edit View" to make changes to your course, and click on "Control Panel" to get to your grade book, you are), then you might want to try exporting with both tab and comma delimiters from Excel on the Mac. I have found that sometimes makes a difference, and both are supported.

Note that I have no experience with Excel on the Mac to draw on here, but I have played with this a bit in Windows.

Hope that helps,

David

Hi. I had this issue and fixed it by round all decimals in my spreadsheet to whole numbers. Before that, I tried the tab-delimited solution and it had no effect. Hope this helps.
