Editing a group assignment

I am trying to edit the due date to an assignment which has been assigned to groups. I have done this before with individual assignments, but now I get an error message appears indicating this assignment can not be changed because someone in the group has viewed the assignment.

I have seen this issue addressed a couple of times since 2007 - is this still a bug???

The assignments take some time to set up, and so recreating them due to an extended due date is not an effective answer.

PS: we are using WebCT Vista 8
