A professor stated that they used Safe Assign and it is displaying that a student plagiarized from another student's paper (close to 122).  However, when he looked up the other paper, there is no common text.  He thinks Safe Assign is mixing it's links when checking for copying.  He is asking for any help or ideas?

Thank you for the response, Mike.  I wish I would have held off on the post.  I ran the paper through again excluding the previous 2 other student's papers that it had matched it to.  The percentage went up to 54% of plagiarism.  Then, I created a screen cast displaying the steps I took to see all of the text that was copied and pasted from the other 4 papers into this particular student's paper.  From what I could tell - Safe Assign is working just fine.  I haven't heard back from the professor, yet.  My guess is user error on his part.  I apologize for NOT digging into this a little deeper before sending out a post.  Please forgive me.

Rita,

I'm not quite sure how the instructor could see 122 matches in the SafeAssign report, but not see any matching text.  The SafeAssign report should be highlighting the text that matches the source when it indicates a possible match.  if you click on the highlighted text, it will display the original text from the source.  Is there no highlighted text in the report?  Where is he going to look up the other paper?
