If I hide a Grade Centre column by clicking the chevrons beside the column name and selecting Hide, I would expect that column to show me it's hidden when I go to Manage->Column Organisation. It should do this by coming up greyed out and in italics, just as it does if you Hide it using Manage->Column Organisation.
It in fact doesn't provide this visual cue that's it's hidden. There's a disjunct somewhere between Hiding columns in these 2 different ways.
When I do what you describe--hide the column by selecting "Hide Column" from the pull-down column menu in the full grade center--then for me it displays as greyed-out, in italics, and marked as "Hidden" under "Manage -> Column Organization", just as it would have if I'd hidden it directly in the "Column Organization" screen.
Might you have hit the "back" button to go the "Column Organization" screen after hiding the column, so you're seeing the previous cached version of the screen, or something like that?

No, no Back button. Here's the sequence. I've checked it numerous times now. Go to Manage -> Column Organization. Ensure all columns are Showing. Set to Show if not. Submit. Select chevrons beside a column. Select Hide Column. THe UI refreshes and the Column is hidden. Go to Manage -> Column Organization. The column I just hid is *not* greyed-out, in italics, and marked as "Hidden". Cancel. Return to UI. The column is still Hidden. No Back button, only the steps described.
Are you using Internet Explorer? Do you know what specific version of Blackboard 9.1 your school is using?
9.1 Service Pack 7. I am seeing the issue in Firefox 11.0
Odd--I'm using almost exactly the same setup (9.1 SP7 HF1 and Firefox 11), and am not able to reproduce what you're seeing. The column is successfully flagged as "Hidden" when I hide it from the column menu, even it's a frozen column, or one in a grading period, etc.

Hi, Now tested in a number of courses and the issue occurred in all courses tested, and for columns representing a variety of activity types such as VoiceBoard, Journal, BB Assignment and Test, Forum and Wiki. (I'm the same poster, by the way, but now have my own account.) I don't think Hide Column is used frequently, though, so I'm happy to leave this with a question-mark for now.
