Hi!

A participant is having difficulty with the spell checker within Blackboard. She says "when I use spell check on Bb lately the weirdest things happens. Every time you click on it, the screen darkens, until it becomes black. Then you have to click on "spell check ok" many times to have the screen go to normal again. But what the biggest pain is, is that the words that were misspelled are not corrected."

She is using:

Mac OSX Version 10.5.8

Firefox 10.0.2

She says she has updated her plugins.

Do you have any suggestions I can provide to her?

Thank you,

Rynette

Rynette,

In the Blackboard text editor, the clicking the spell-checker icon opens up a new window which is displayed in the foreground, so the first thing I'd check is to make sure her Firefox pop-up blocker (or security software installed on the machine) is not preventing the spell-checker from displaying.  Also, you may need to clear the Java cache, since the spell-checker is a Java applet.

Misspelled words aren't automatically corrected.  Rather, in the spell-checker window, the misspelled word is displayed, and the user is presented with possible selections to fix it.  When it's gone through all the misspelled words, there's an "OK" button the user has to click before they can go back to the text editor.  Until they click the "OK" button, the screen is indeed greyed out.
