The "Points Possible" column in students' My Grades view is blank for most assignments. Why?

We're currently running Bb 9.1.60230.0

This is a recent change that I'm seeing in only one class, not system wide.

In the past, the points possible were showing for every assignment in the students' My Grades view.  Now, there are a few values showing here and there in a seemingly random pattern, but most are blank -- including those that previously displayed correctly earlier.

I have made no changes to the settings in the grade columns or to the corresponding content area assignments other than setting new due dates -- so I'm puzzled as to what would have affected this change.  The only thing I have changed in the Grade Book is rearranging the order of Grading Periods using the Column Management  interface so that students would see the most current term first.  (I tried putting the order back the way it was when troubleshooting, but it made no difference).

Do you have any idea what might be causing this, and do you have suggestions for restoring these displays?  Thanks!

Sharon,

You're using version 9.1 SP6.  I haven't really seen this on my SP5 or SP7 test servers, and am having a hard time duplicating it.  The only columns I see in My Grades with no Points Possible shown are Total/Weighted Total columns that are set to be running totals (and therefore don't have a set number of points possible...)

Just to confirm, what kinds of columns are these? I.e. are they standalone columns, or calculated columns, or are they linked to tests, or assignments, or SafeAssignments, etc.?    Do the points possible show when you look at the columns in Column Management?   Are they associated with rubrics?   Is the primary display set to Score, Percentage, or something else?  Also, were the columns in grading periods before?

Just to confirm, what kinds of columns are these? I.e. are they standalone columns, or calculated columns, or are they linked to tests, or assignments, or SafeAssignments, etc.?    They are linked to content area assignments and tests.  No SafeAssignments. No stand alones.

Do the points possible show when you look at the columns in Column Management?   Yes

Are they associated with rubrics?   No

Is the primary display set to Score, Percentage, or something else?    When originally created, they were set to display Scores, then I changed them to Percentages near the end of the term so students could make more sense of their progress. (in spite of making this change, the Points Possible were still showing up until a few days ago even in Percentage display -- now they are not showing)

A few minutes ago, I tried changing some of them back to display Scores, and the Points Possible showed up again!  Hmmmm.  When I changed them back to percentages, the Points Possible disappeared again.

Note:

Assignments that started out  displayed as percentages & were not changed still show the possible points, including assignments for which the highest possible number of points possible is less than 100.

Assignment columns that are set to display as Complete/Incomplete show the possible points (all of these are worth 10 points).

Also, were the columns in grading periods before?  Yes, they have been in grading periods for as long as the grade center was set up for the class. Also, all of our calculated grade columns are set to "No" for running totals.

Sharon,

I don't have a 9.1SP6 server to test, but on my SP5 server, the points possible continues to show in "My Grades" whether the primary display is set to Score or percentage.  From looking at the Known Issues list, it appears that SP5 is the version that actually has the bug (identified as LRN-22511), and that the points possible are not supposed to be showing when the primary display is set to Percentage.

That behavior is fixed in SP6, and on my SP7 server changing the primary display to Percentage prevents the points possible from displaying, but changing it back to Score causes the points possible to return under "My Grades".

Did your school upgrade from SP5 to SP6 recently?  That might explain why columns that had not been edited since before the upgrade were still displaying points possible with a Percentage display.

I ran into this same issue today. Students cannot see their grades in My Grades page, but I can see the students' grades in instructor's Grade Center.

Not sure why it happened.

Tigress,

Are students not seeing the "points possible" in My Grades, or are they not seeing the actual grades?

Hi Mike,

The students couldn't see the actual grades. I've figured out the problem. The primary display is set as "Percentage", but the instructor entered points(score) in the Grade Center. After I changed the "Percentage" to "Score", it showed to the students in their My Grades.
