I'm trying to work out whether it is possible to restrict the viewing of an announcement to certain group(s) of students at all, or whether there is another way round this? I suppose we could always use the group email facility but really we would like to be able to use the announcement system in this way.

As a supplementary, related question can you restrict access to a link (and so a content section) on the course menu at all, or is there some neat workaround for achieving this?

Many thanks for any ideas?

Daniel,

1) No, you can used adaptive release restrictions on content items, but not on announcements.  On the other hand, you could just have the course entry point be a content area that you call "Announcements", and create adaptive-release content items for your announcements instead of using the announcements tool.

2) It's possible to set adaptive release restrictions on the things that a menu link points to, which will prevent a user from being able to access it (with a message saying it's not available), but that doesn't prevent the link from showing on the course menu.

Being able to apply adaptive release restrictions to announcements and menu items would definitely be useful, and it's worth submitting a suggestion/enhancement request to Blackboard using the form at http://suggestions.blackboard.com.
