I've created many Discussion forums this semester for students to submit their assignments to. But I'm wondering if having students submit assignment in the Assignment tool is better. What are the pros and cons of using Assignments as opposed to Discussion forum as the place for students to submit assignments?
One problem I had with submitting to Assignment tool is the Assignment Dropbox would list all the students enrolled in the course. With some assignments (for example: where only the group leader submits a group assignment for the whole group), I'd have all these distracting names in the Assignment dropbox. Doing it through Discussion forums avoided this because only those students who submitted were listed (instead of everyone as with Assignment dropbox). How did you handle that? Did you ignore these names that you never used OR is there a way to eliminate them without having to click on each one and delete it?

I think either method would work for you. If you did use the Assignments tool, you could also use the Group manager tool and then assign the assignments to the group. What this does is to show youin the assignment dropbox are the groups with the students names out to the side. On the plus side, when you grade an assignment to a group, the grade is automatically posted to all the members of the group in the gradebook.
