I'm trying to find some documentation that gives a comprehensive desciption of roles.  We've just installed our development server and while I am scheduled for training, I have some support users that need access now.

They need to be able to help instructors and students, IE:  help instructors develop courses, create and backup courses, as well as enrol/unenrol students if necessary. I don't know what permissions/roles to give to accomplish this globally.

Is there such a document?  I've been looking through the help, but not finding this in-depth information.

Thanks inadvance

Robyn,

I've actually started working on a document about Blackboard Roles.  It still needs more details added for specific roles and privileges, but there's an overview at BlackboardRoles.rtf .  There is not specific document about which roles allow what, because that's very much customizable by the individual institution.

One confusing point is that there are several different types of roles in Blackboard, and it's easy to get confused which is which.  If you are trying to set up accounts for support people who will access lots of different courses without necessarily having a long-term association with them, you'll want to look at "System Roles" rather than "Course Roles" or "Institutional Roles".

Which particular role you want to give these support users depends very much on what specific things you want them to be able to do--"help instructors and students" is pretty general!   Since you want them to be able to create and back up courses and manage enrollments, I might start by giving them a "Course Administrator" system role, then adjusting it as necessary.

For helping with developing course content, the simplest way to accomplish this is to make sure that the "Course Administrator" role has the " Course/Organization Control Panel > Quick Enroll" privilege, which will allow them to easily add themselves as instructors in a course and see/do whatever an instructor can.
