When using Firefox on this computer to access WebCT, I am not presented with notification icons for new content in my courses. Notification of new email from students is particularly valuable/critical. I am using Firefox 3.6.13 with all plugins updated; OS is Windows 7; Java is update 23. I have encountered the same issue in multiple versions of Firefox. Browsercheck claims that my setup is compatible and Firefox 3.6 is listed as "certified", so this behavior should not be occurring. I have been able to see notification icons on other computers using Firefox.
Has anyone encountered similar issues. I saw some minimally similar posts on the boards from others, but the issue reported here does not involve global settings (other people see the icons for this course, and the icons appear in IE, a thoroughly inferior and non-standard browser).
An extension and add-on might be hiding the notifications from you because it thinks they advertisements. Try disabling all extensions and add-ons (do not remove) then restart and check to see if the icons appear. That would be quick confirmation whether they are the cause.
Security software can hide content in web pages so you cannot see it. They are designed to site between your web browser and the web sites you view. Norton Internet Security was a headache for me years ago because it hid "Advancement", the name of the part of the university where people give money, because the link was www.university.edu/adv which Norton took to mean advertisement.
