I have just had some students use the grading forms to review each others' work - and to comment on it.
THat was more or less OK, but for a couple of issues:
1: They were limited to 1,000 char comments, fine for most, but some had a lot to say. (Got round it by getting them to create a second message)
2: Word wraps ... or rather they don't (in Firefox at least) - so we had a lot of horizontal scrolling to see the comments. Is this a known issue, or is it browser / OS specific. (Firefox 3.6.6. & XP)
Also:
I wanted students to self-review; in the end, the only way I could do it was to create a groups of 1, to post a message that just said "My review" for each student. They could then, in effect grade my post, but of course, they were looking at their own work as they did it.
It was a bit time consuming, posting all those messages (do-able as there are 20 in the class, would have been more impractical if there were more students) - are there other options.
We have Vista 8.03 at present.

1. The 1,000 character limit is more of an HTML forms issue.
2. I believe this is a known issue. I'm not sure if this would be browser specific or not.
3. Have you tried setting up your discussion as a journal? I'm not sure if I exactly understand what you are trying to do but by using the Journal option, you can easily set up a discussion area for each of your students. among the options is to allow it to be just private between you and your student or it can be open to all students.

I'd already set up the Journals for them - the problem that I ran into was the fact the grading forms don't seem to be usable on posts you've created yourself. Getting them to grade others' posts etc., wasn't a problem. Just doing their own.
From what I've seen, thoguh, I've an idea that the newer versions of BB let students self assess.
