The Library here uses Blackboard's content collection e-reserve section to store scans/PDFs of published materials scanned under the Copyright Licencing Agency's scanning licence - but we have a problem.

We have scans that teaching staff want to carry over from 2008-2009 courses to the current 2009-2010 courses and which were originally stored in the the course e-reserve folder for 2008-2009.
These don't transfer automatically to the 2009-2010 ereserve folder.
What we'd like to know if anyone can help is -

can this be done?
and if not, are links to scans in the 2008-2009 ereserve folder still active from the 2009-2010 course?
and if so, what will happen with these links when courses roll over to the next academic year?

Any help very gratefully received

Hi Marion,

I think this can be done, though it depends on how you want to do this.

Is it the intention to copy the 2008-2009 courses and make them the 2009-2010 courses. In that case you neeed to select the update permissions option under Sysadmin panel > (CS) settings > copy settings > select Update permissions for Content System items and folders, including those in e-Reserves

Another option would be to move the (reused) e-reserves from the 2008-2009 folder into the new 2009-2010 folder and create new links to the 2009 - 2010 courses where needed. It depends on the version of Blackboard you're using if the links in the 2009-2009 courses will still work. Where there's a relative or absolute link to the e-reserves they will be broken, in case there's an xid (Xythos ID) link created the links should still work after moving content to another location. You need to investigate the links in the course to these e-reservers.

Assuming that you have to pay for each e-reserve I wonder how this will be done with the links to e-reservers in older courses. Is there stilll being paid for or will these e-reservers that are only used in the course 2008-2009 be removed and only reused e-reservers in the next year will continue to be available?

Hi Henk

Many thanks for this quick reply. I hope the first option will work for us. If the second option involves manually moving files from 2008-2009 to 2009-2010 ereserve folder and also then changing all the links in the 2009-2010 courses, we'd rather not have to do this if at all possible - but again will look in to what version we're using and what type of links are being used.

We do pay for the scans going in to the e-reserve folders but we only pay once - even if we re-use them year on year. What we have to do though is report the re-use to the Copyright Licencing Agency in order to comply with the scanning licence we have with them.   If scans aren't used year on year we must remove them from the e-reserve folders.

Many thanks again.

Kind regards

Marion
