When you click on the column information for Weighted Grades, it shows "Varies per student" by Points Possible. This seems strange since other columns indicate the maximum points a student could receive.

Cindy,

Despite the display options which seem to imply otherwise, weighted total columns can only be displayed as percentage.  It would make no sense to show a "score" or "points possible" in a Weighted total column, since the points for some items count more heavily toward the total than the points for other items--that's what makes it a "weighted total" and not simply a 'total".

However, depending on which Blackboard version you have, a regular Total column may also show "Varies by student" for the points possible, even if the total is not displayed as a "running total" (where only submitted graded items are counted towards the total).

Mike,

I agree it would make no sense but then why does Blackboard (9) display a number% under the Points Possible, to the right of the weighted percent, in student view?  Shouldn't the points possible be empty for a weighted column?

This is definitely a confusing column.

We just upgraded to version 9, and most of the Instructors had Weighted Total columns that were set to display as Score. In version 7.3, this wasn't a problem. In 9, the calculations have changed and the score value is no longer out of 100 points.

I can't seem to figure out what calculation is being done to achieve this score value...

We are running 9.1, it seems to me the display is always a percentage as long as you set the column to display as Score or Percentage. You will see the percentage sign when the column is set to display as percentage.
