--- Server: Bb Learning System Release 6.0-6.2(WIN) | Client: IE7.x(WIN) ---

I have two related questions:

1. Can the Table of Contents in my SCORM object be turned into the Learning Module Table of Contents (as happens when you import an IMS package)? (i.e. without having to do it manually)

2. If not, and the SCORM object is added as a single page to a Learning Module (so that you end up with a LM Table of Contents and a SCORM Table of Contents) will Blackboard track a student's progress through each page of the SCORM object or only the one page in the Learning Module that links to the SCORM object?

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks

Ken,

You posted in a Blackboard (WebCT) CE/Vista area but specified Blackboard Learning Systems 6.0-6.2, "Classic" version. But since you mention Learning Modules, we will assume Blackboard CE/Vista.

The answer to both questions is "not possible" in the current versions of both Blackboard (WebCT) CE/Vista and Blackboard LS "Classic".

1. A SCORM modules is an "item", just like a Word document with a table of contents. None of the Blackboards can "dig" into the file to extract the table of contents for the learning module.

2. Same as navigating inside a Word document or PowerPoint presentation, both Blackboards can only track access to the SCORM module, nothing inside the module. However, unlike the Word example, both Blackboards have some "SCORM tracking" that reads the time spent variable in a SCORM module.

Hope this helps...

Cheers,

Thanks Bob,

We're on CE6.2, which I thought was the option I'd chosen.

1. It's interesting that a Blackboard LM can recreate the navigation for an IMS package but not a SCORM package. I'm not technical enough to know why but it's a shame. Having a SCORM Table of Contents inside an LM Table of Contents, combined with the Course Table of Contents severely reduces the amount of space for actual learning content.

2. Blackboard's claim that their LMS can track a SCORM object is a little misleading if it can only track the object as an item and not the individual pages within the object. It's a little like saying that an LMS that records when students have logged in and out of a course is tracking students. Again, perhaps it's a technical issue.

Thanks for the quick response.

Ken,

While they use similar IMS specifications, terms and packaging and may have some of the same files, SCORM modules and IMS Content Packages are two different beasts.

IMS Content Packages are specialized zip archive files with instructions on how to unpackage and add the files to the LMS as a tool/item/component. Think of it as a "self-extracting zip file" that has additional scripts to automate the process of creating learning modules and quizzes so you do not have to do it.

SCORM are more like small "active" web sites or small pseudo-applications that need to be run with a "player" or "mini-server". While a SCORM module may have the same content files as an IMS Content Package, the additional code is for "playing" the files and passing any data gathered inside the module to the system that contains the module. All SCORM-compliant LMSs have some type of SCORM player that is similar conceptually to the Adobe/Macromedia Flash Player or the Sun Java Runtime Environment.

If you expand the SCORM module into a learning module, you no longer have the "player" capability. It just becomes a collection of content in learning module or quiz.

Note that this is not just a "Blackboard" thing. Same situation applies to other LMSs including Moodle and Angel.

As to tracking, it's up to the SCORM module to do the tracking inside the SCORM module and to pass the information back to the LMS that contains the module. Also, the LMS must have the functionality to "read" that data. At this time, Blackboard LMSs and most other LMSs only "read" the tracking summary from the SCORM module of time spent inside a SCORM module and a raw score.

Hope this helps...

hello, blackboard does not have the ability to track as it does MOODLE, see link to a zip file on the following link:

Hi Felipe,

We are searching for a way to get SCORM tracking data sent to Blackboard and have found your posting. Can you please let us know how your SCORM package generates the tracking report in Moodle? How was the Moodle customization done to handle the SCORM content tracking?

I understand the Moodle tracking is different /better than Blackboard's but it would be useful to understand how you made it work with Moodle..

Thank you,

Mirela
