I need to create formulas for subtotals and totals in the grade book. How do I create the formulas?

Hi Peter. What you will want to do is add a calculated column to the gradebook. You can then click the Edit Formula icon and use the functions built in to Blackboard to create weighted formulas, etc. You could also use the Export to Excel feature to download the gradebook in to Excel and use Excel's formula functionality.

Brian, thank you for your very prompt reply. I missed the Edit Formula icon. I agree that it would be a good idea to export to excal and do the calculations there

Dear Dr. C
I do not need a SmartView or the Edit Formula icon. Instead, I need a way to enter a formula.
Do you know how to do any of the following in a column in the Blackboard Grade Center? Without at least one of these capabilities, the Blackboard Grade Center is useless to me.

1. Enter a formula, e.g., for each row, Column 3 = (Column 1 - Column 2) / (Column 2) or even just Column 3 = - Column 2. The built-in "Total" and "Weighted Total" capabilities are not enough.
2. A way to assign all students the same numerical score at once in a category.
3. A way to count automatically how many columns are included in a particular category.

Excel and similar programs do all of these. But I can't keep uploading and downloading from Excel. I need something built into Blackboard or I will need to use something else.
Thank you.

Hello,

We also are looking for a way to create a formula in the grade center.  Exporting to Excel is not a convenient option.

Thank you!

Theresa,

Are you using Blackboard CE/Vista (formerly WebCT), or are you using Blackboard Learn (9.x)?  There's no functionality in the Blackboard Learn Grade Center for creating formulas, aside from the the limited functionality available via the total, weighted total, minimum/maximum, and average calculated columns.

Thanks, Mike.  We have recently migrated to Learn 9.1 from CE8 and are accumstomed to that functionality.  We thought we might just be missing something.  An option for building formulas would be welcomed by our faculty.

Theresa,

Blackboard has been gradually incorporating features from CE/Vista into Blackboard Learn.  If there's a particular feature like grade center formulas that you'd like to see added (or bumped up in priority), then I'd recommend submitting a suggestion/enhancement request to Blackboard at http://suggestions.blackboard.com.
